The heroic story of Hercules starts with his birth. They believe that Argos was his birthplace. Zeus wanted a champion for all mortals and all gods. He had decided that Alcmene would be an honorable mother to Hercules, or Heracles as the Achaeans referred to him. Alcmene had twins, Hercules to Zeus and Iphicles to her husband Amphitryon.
Hera, wife of Zeus, had fallen asleep and Zeus had let Hercules feed off of her so that way Hercules would become immortal. Hera became angry and sent two serpents to kill both Hercules and Iphicles. As Iphicles was scared, Hercules was curious. He had actually ended up strangling both snakes to death.
Afterwards, Amphityron became suspicious of Hercules and talked with Tiresias. Tiresias, a blind seer, revealed to Amphityron that Hercules was to become a champion. She brought both boys up with care and raised them with the best tutors and athletic training. They soon knew that Hercules loved to farm with his father. This is where his strength grew the most.
Although his strength was there, Hercules did have to test it. He was summoned to Mount Kithaeron to kill a lion. This lion had been eating the herds of Amphitryon. Hercules had very little problem killing the lion. Hercules ended up skinning the lion. While he set out on his quest, Thebes had gone to war with Orchomenus. Hercules armed the people of Thebes with spoils from the temples. After victory was assured, Hercules flooded their (Orchomenus') crops.
Creon, the king of Thebes, wanted to give his daughter Megara to be the wife of Hercules and Iphicles was given the younger sister. Both couples had many children. One of Iphicles's sons, Iolaus, became best friends and an understudy to Hercules.
Hera decided to start plotting a plan against Hercules. She mad Hercules extremely mad so he would attack Iolaus. He luckily escaped. Hercules starting fighting imaginary beasts. However, when the madness wore off he discovered that he had killed all of his children and two of his brothers. Horrified at what he had done Hercules became secluded and asked the king of Thespiae for purification.
When he asked the king what he should do, the king informed him he must do many laborious tasks. He had to face many beasts which include but are not limited to: The Nemean Lion, the Hydra, the Erymanthian Boar, the Ceryneia Hind, the Stymphalian Birds, the Augean Stables, the Cretan Bull, the Horses of Diomedes, the Amazon Girdle, the Cattle of Geryon, Cerbeus, and the Apples of the Hesperides.
When Hercules got back to Thebes he and his wife, Megara, separated. Hercules decided that it was time to search for a new wife. As fate would have it, Eurytus of Oechalia was looking for some to give his daughter to. The person that he would give her away to would have to have a better shot than himself. Hercules ended up having a better shot, but Eurytus accused him of cheating.
While Hercules departed, Eurytus discovered that some of his horses had been stolen. He assumed that Hercules was the thief. Unfortunate Hercules had actually bought the horse from the real thief. Iphitus, Eurytus's son didn't believe that Hercules was the real thief. Hercules had invited him to dinner and Iphitus had accidentlly informed him of the reason that he was visiting him. Enraged Hercules did an unforgivable crime and killed Iphitus in his house.
Hercules went to go speak to Pythoness, but she wanted nothing to do with him. At this, Hercules became angered and threatened her and stole the tripod. Apollo was summoned, and when he got there he confronted Hercules. Zeus had to use a thunderbolt to separate two of his sons. He then declared Hercules to be enslaved for murdering Iphitus.
After his enslavement, Hercules went to find yet another wife. This time he fought for Deianira, the daughter of the king of Calydon. He fought the river god and won. They lived in Calydon until Hercules accidentally killed a cupbearer. and they were forced to flee to Trachis.
Crossing a river would prove to be difficult. Although Hercules could easily swim and carry his wife across, she did not want to get wet. A centaur named Nessus offered to carry Deianira on his back. The two agreed and while Hercules was swimming across, Nessus grabbed his wife and galloped away with the intention to rape her. When Hercules reached the other side of the river, he fired an arrow which hit the centaur in the heart. While Hercules swam back, Nessus whispered to Deianira to take some of his blood in case her husband stopped loving her. If she put it on his shirt no rival would ever possess him. She took some in a jar and kept it.
When they reached Trachis, Hercules was confroned by the King Eurytus of Oechalia. An oracle told Hercules that a war with the king would be the last of his adventures and the rest of his life would be followed by peace. Ever so ready to began a life of serenity, Hercules attacked the king. Hercules asked Deianira for a clean wardrobe after this. She put the blood on Hercules shirt and sent it off.
The mixture on the shirt had been touched by his arrow. His arrow was dipped in the hydra's venomous blood which made a lethal poison. When Hercules dressed, he was on fire. When Deianira realized what she had done to her beloved husband, she hung herself.
